All of us who work with food need to be concerned with how our work impacts the environment, the people, and the sustainability of our planet. The food industry is tasked with providing people with safe and healthy food. There have been, however, several food related scares with outbreaks and recalls. We emphasise the importance of food safety with all we work with from the point of production, through the entire supply chain, to the retail and consumer levels. The issues and aspects involved with food safety and quality are diverse and complex. It is important to have efficient access to as many useful resources as possible. This is our humble attempt at helping our partners find crucially important information to guide their food safety practices.

GLOBALG.A.P

BRCGS

The BRCGS Global Standards are used by suppliers in over 100 countries to protect food safety during the manufacture, storage and distribution of food and food packaging materials. BRCGS Certification helps companies demonstrate compliance with the GFSI and gain access to top EU retailers. BRCGS Global Standards include: Global Standard for Food, Global Standard for the Storage and Distribution, Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials, Global Standard for Agents and Brokers. BRCGS certification is suitable for: Any food processing or packing operation in which open food is handled, processed, packed, stored and distributed; manufacturing of packaging materials for food. PrimusGFS

PrimusGFS certification is a leading food safety standard benchmarked to GFSI and accepted by buyers around the world. Its integrated approach allows you to certify both your farm and packhouse operations during the same audit, saving time and money. Primus GFS is well recognized in U.S., Canada, Mexico, Latin and South America. PrimusGFS certification is suitable for: Farms, ranches, greenhouses, pack houses, processors, storage and distribution centers, cold storage facilities, pre-processors of plant products, grains, and pulses, processors of perishable plant products and ambient stable products (drying, roasting, salting, milling). FSSC22000

The Food Safety System Certification (FSSC) 22000 is a complete certification Scheme for the auditing and certification of Food Safety Management Systems for food manufacturers and other sectors of the supply chain. The scheme is based on ISO 22000 and ISO/TS 22003 technical specification, plus additional GFSI benchmarked criteria. FSSC 22000 certification is suitable for: Any food processing or packing operation in which open food is handled, processed, packed, stored and distributed; manufacturing of packaging materials for food. MSC Fisheries Certification

The MSC Fisheries Standard is used to assess if a fishery is well-managed and sustainable. When a fishery is successfully certified to the Fisheries Standard, its certified catch can be sold with the blue MSC label. Certification to the MSC Fisheries Standard is voluntary. It’s open to all fisheries who catch marine or freshwater organisms in the wild. This includes most types of fish and shellfish. Fisheries are assessed by accredited independent certifiers (called Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs) – also called certification bodies), not the MSC.
MSC certification is available to all wild-capture fisheries, regardless of their size, scale, ecology, geography or technology.  These include single species, multi-species, trawl, long line, hand raked, pots, freshwater, marine, inshore, offshore, demersal, pelagic and enhanced fisheries.

Safe Quality Food Certification

The Safe Quality Food (SQF) Program, based on the HACCP codex is a rigorous and credible food safety and quality program that is recognized by retailers, brand owners, and food service providers world-wide. Recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), the SQF family includes several levels of certification. Food Safety Fundamental Program, Food Safety Program, and Food Quality Program. These programs are designed to meet industry, customer, and regulatory requirements for all sectors of the food supply chain.

SQF certification is suitable for: SQF certification can benefit any food processing or packing operation in which food is produced, handled, processed, packed, stored and distributed.

Responsible Meat Initiative

The Responsible Meat Initiative (ReMI), which is convened by World Business Council for Sustainable Development works towards a vision of meat being responsibly produced, accessible and consumed as part of a sustainable and just food system. ReMI’s mission is to: 1. Define responsible production criteria for use along meat value chains; 2. Help consumers recognize the value of sustainable and just meat products; 3. Build value chain cooperation and communication so that the higher value of sustainable and just meat flows from consumer to producer.

Equitable Food Initiative

Equitable Food Initiative is a non-profit skill-building and certification organization that brings growers, farmworkers, retailers, and consumers together to create a safer, more equitable food system. This unique approach sets standards for labor practices, food safety and pest management while engaging workers at all levels to address issues and challenges in the produce industry. The Equitable Food Initiative certification is a comprehensive audit that applies broadly to all fruit and vegetable crops and addresses labor conditions, food safety and pest management.
